inujirushi tote bags

i've written a post about inujirushi bicycle bags before.
recently i went into their website to have a look again and saw some nice tote bags and limited editions!
the thing about inujirushi is that it's got long history, good reputation even without advertisement for a long time, and it's bags are made of lasting materials with nice bright and deep colours.

below are zipper tote bags, limited editions! but not water resistant.

durtbagz

sorry have not been around coz liz is diagnosed with pin worms!!!! eeeee!!!
so i've been cleaning the house!
i was really freaked out!

anyway erin from durtbagz pointed me to durtbagz and i thought they're really cute and funny and practical!
moreover you can make a statement with your bag too! :)

apparently if you send them your sign and they do use it, you'll get a shirt and a bag set with your own sign on it! cool!

YOU'VE HEARD THIS ONE...

So, a priest, a rabbi, and a horse walk into a bar...you know the rest. This bag is funny whether used as a mens shoulder bag or a womens laptop bag. The only thing not funny about this bag is how functional it is: five extra pockets, 50" adjustable strap, and a water resistant, lined interior. Use this as your travel tote bag and make your fellow passengers jealous. The joke's on them.

bags perspective

our friends cannot understand why kaif and i are so crazy over bags.
here are some reasons that probably explain why i am:

1. we use bags everyday as we love going out.

2. most importantly, bags affect my posture and general health because i go out with my kids by myself very often and there're usually a lot of things to carry, many stairs to take due to the old apartment we are living in.  bags that allow me to fish out my mobile phones, wet wipes, water bottle and wallet easily even when pushing the pram with one hand are most desirable!

3. whether you like the idea or not, the bags you carry do make people form certain impressions about you - whether you are just brand conscious, fashionable, eco-friendly, colourful, frugal, down to earth etc, etc...

4. different bags serve different needs, they are not just fashion statements.  hence most of us usually own a few bags rather than one.

for example

when out shopping in town with a young baby and toddler, you need a bag that
a. is fashionable,
b. is sufficiently big for milk bottles, formula, thermos flask, diapers, wet wipes, changing mat, blankets, water bottle, toys, yet not too big so that it will not be too heavy and tiring to carry,
c. allow you to fish out your wallet, wet wipes, mobile phone or keys easily even when you have to push the baby pram with one hand,
d. is easy and comfortable to carry,
e. doesn't make you feel like you need to protect it from rain, dirt or dust.
(this is because when your hands are full you may need to put your bag on the floor when hanging it on the pram is not possible)

when out for picnic or swimming, you need a bag that
a. is big
b. is water-proof
c. allow you to throw in and take out bulky stuff like towels, bath toys, mats, tupperwares easily without considering distorting its shape and space

when out for excursions such as hiking and cycling, you need a bag that
a. frees up both hands
b. easy to carry
c. weather proof
d. big

therefore we are constantly drawn to bags that are classic, stylish, durable, not dated, functional, interesting and easy to carry.

here are some bags we love:
1. freitag tote bag
good for going to beach, swimming or raining day.

pros
a. water proof
b. comes with adjustable seat belt strap so it's wide and comfortable for slinging
c. comes with handles so you can carry it instead of slinging across your chest or shoulders
d. unique, one of a kind bag
e. comes with a zip pouch and handphone pocket inside
f. can be trashed around

cons
a. no other compartments for bottles, diapers etc, so zip locks or organising bags needed.
b. smells when it's damp inside so need to sun it

2. freitag backpack
good for excursion and traveling

pros
a. water-proof
b. you can adjust the size of the bag according to your need
c. there is a side zip that makes taking things convenient
d. can be trashed around

cons
a. there aren't enough compartments within to organise loose items hence organisers required.

3. mulberry tote bag
good for last minute outings when you can just throw stuff into the huge bag

pros
a. water-proof
b. huge with big opening that makes taking things out easy
c. can be trashed around

cons
a. tend to put too many things into the bag hence making it too heavy to carry
b. no compartments except for one zip pouch inside for mobile phones and keys only thus making it difficult to fish out small items.

4. kate spade diaper bag (this is my favourite)
good for shopping and most occasions

pros
a. good length and shape that allow you to fish out your ringing mobile easily while having to push the pram with one hand
b. many practical side and inner pockets for bottles, phones, keys, wallets and lose items
c. comes with nice changing mat
d. made of canvas
e. simple design that is not dated
f. you can hang the bag on the stroller

cons
a. easy target for pick pockets!

piet breinholm - the last bag

this is cool.
founder: a former drummer in a band - piet breinholm.
inspired by the original designs of danish leather schoolbags that has long been out of production.
the last bag not only carries memories for every generation in denmark, it is made with great attention to design, detail and durability.

singapore national museum - fashion gallery

this is my favourite.
the gallery is full of clothes and accessories worn by women in singapore during the 1950s and 1960s.
however, i don't find these totally unfamiliar.
today's boutiques are full of similar retro stuff.
it's just so amazing to see that fashion repeats itself after a few generations.
hence, never throw away your old blouse, dress or shirt!
they may come back in fashion and worth lots of money like today's vintage stuff!

when you enter, the first thing you see are the floral western frocks that the ladies here wore for parties in the 1960s.
unfortunately the picture taken is not so clear due to no flash photography.
these dresses with scooped and sweetheart necklines were usually starched and worn with can-can petticoat underneath.
next to it is the film show of the 1950s and 60s fashion trend and sam foo - tight fitting top and long pants - made of elastic fabric.

there were also many retro bags, glasses and shoes!
really gorgeous!

i was thrilled to see the 6o's bridal gown, vintage fabric prints and antique sewing machines too!

hope you enjoy looking through the photo album below.
sorry if you are looking for the kebayas and cheong sum as i've left them out.
