Have a nice weekend!

image via flickr: atypicalart

here are some interesting stuff which i've found this week:

1) an interview with ken leung, a london based freelance designer who helped launch Monocle magazine and until recently served as its art director.

2) take a look at this functioning sculptural piece: the camper bike, built by artist kevin cyr  in april 2008! a really cool piece of art! via designboom.com

3) russell peters really made me laugh when i watch this video about women and men even though i think he is poking fun at the women more! he is so so good!

4) if you are wondering how hard it is to keep a marriage, to stay strong in a marriage, to keep the romance going in a marriage, try reading the obamas' marriage! a great insight for me! at least, mine is private!!! :P

ok there, i better go or my hubby is going to go to bed without me!!!

have a restful weekend and do spend time, quality time with your loved ones before it's too late! :P

favourite book: timmy the tug

this is a really charming book.
beautifully printed; presented as a facsimile of the original manuscript.
with an enchanting tale of timmy the tug and his subsequent adventures as he escapes his moorings and explores the high sea.

what makes this book even more charming for is the story behind it:

how it was created over 50 years ago by jim downer who intended to impress a girl who later on became his wife and how the drawings ended up with his friend ted hughes who added his verses and kept them till they were rediscovered by ted's wife in 2008!
wow...

you have to read it for yourself and your kids!
a book worth buying and keeping!

got it from book actually...

Interesting news: a chalkboard 'newspaper'

Watch this news report by monocle to find out how Alfred Sirleaf reaches thousands of liberians everyday by writing the day's biggest stories on a large blackboard beside a busy road in the capital.

With his creativity, passion, guts and hard work, he is indeed making a difference to the society which he is living in!
We need more people like that!

have a nice and restful weekend!

hey friends, what are you up to this weekend?

are you feeling exhausted and flat from a week's worth of work?

Sometimes a busy and exhausting week need not leave us unhappy, unfulfilled and disheartened.
In fact, we can feel very satisfied and contented from a very busy life.
We usually feel discontented only when our hearts are not cheery and thankful towards God and when we think we are self-sufficient; we can do all things by ourselves.

I'm no exception.  When i don't count the blessings of God enough and when i look to man for affirmations and not God, a busy week can lead to emotional unheavals! Ha! does that sound familiar?

Anyway, have a restful weekend if you have not had a good week.

Here are some of my favourite readings of the week:

1) confessing "I don't want to confess!" from metro moms blog

2) what's fickle about fatigue? from metro moms blog

3) stolen beauty by garance dore
This reminds me that i shouldn't spend so much money on spa to give myself a treat, hoping to enjoy the entire 1 and 1/2 hour of massage!!!!

4) Cool flower arrangement from design*sponge blog: we like it wild: fall market to table

5) Coffee culture: The Espresso Room: Not just another Coffee Shop by the arbuturian

have a nice weekend!

hope you are all going to have a restful weekend ahead!  most importantly, hope you have a great time with your loved ones!

I am very touched by how Nie Nie (stephanie, a well-known blogger) is living such a brave life as a mom of 4 after a near death plane crash!  Watch an interview with her here about her daily struggles!  i must admit that i've taken health, motherhood, children and hubby for granted most of the time!

here are 3 beautiful desserts that you may want to try out this weekend:
purple velvet cupcakes (using beet to replace the usual red colouring) from small stump + studio choo
red velvet cupcakes (i used this recipe to make the children's day cupcakes.  i simply omitted sugar to make sugarless cupcakes!  though the cupcakes do not taste very sweet and tend to be more dense due to the omission of sugar, they taste rich and flavourful due to the dark chocolate and dried cranberries.  moreover, after you do the frosting, the cake will taste sweet enough!  I used sweet white chocolate, mascarpone cheese and fresh milk to make the frosting instead.)

2) the most controversial magazine covers of all time via cup of jo and swiss miss

if you are interested in going to penang or just looking at what you could eat there, you should take a look at this!
beautiful photos of penang food and more!

favourite read: monocle magazine sep issue 26

The september issue has several articles that captured my attention.

1. necklace by Ecojewel (based in Vicenza, Italy)
picture shows a necklace from its hibiscus collection, made from 3 different colours of silver: white, yellow and black, each went through a special treatment.
basically the firm purchases all the manufacturing scraps of precious silver left over from selected local factories to produce their jewellery and produce all their marketing material and packaging in italy instead of China from recylced materials so as to achieve a zero footprint for their brand from start to finish!
i find their jewellery really charming: ethical, vintage, elegant and non-ostentatious but i'm not sure about their pricing!!! ;p

2. AP moller school in Schleswig, northern Germany
this is my dream school boy!
Why wasn't my school so cool???
I'd have been such an inspired and eager student instead of one who dread going to school!!!
watch the reportage of the school by monocle here

3. Norway re-engineering the way its citizens participate in ticking the right box by appointing a team of designer from - Blueroom Design Studio, Innovativoli Industridesign and KAdabra Productk Design - to rebrand the election system, to make voting simpler, appealing and important!
This is ultra cool!
From monocle article: back in your box - Norway

4. the Globe bikes are really beautiful! as charming as the vespas!!!
i wish singapore has a biking culture!
sorry guys, have to stop blogging now coz marissa is crying! Gotta go!  Check out the bikes of you have not seen them! :)
